Gwen Nielson is a gamer and she’s damn proud of it. Her mother may be a former beauty queen and her kid sister may participate in every pageant the state of Colorado has to offer, but Gwen is content to stay at home and play on her Xbox. To her, life isn’t about fashion and make-up; it’s about making a difference and keeping a low profile. And while most of the girls at her high school hang out at the local country club vying for the popular boys’ attention, Gwen is cool with having a boyfriend she’s never met. Pete is a fellow online gamer who lives in California. He’s funny and sweet, and his father owns a gaming company, which is an added bonus because Gwen gets to test out new games before they’re released to the public.

When Pete mails a new game for her to beta test, Gwen patiently awaits its arrival, but the package is never delivered. To make matters worse, when she calls to let Pete know, she discovers that he’s at the hospital after succumbing to a mysterious illness. Hours later, an ambulance arrives next door because her neighbor’s youngest son, Ben, suddenly becomes ill too. His parents and doctors aren’t sure why he has slipped into a coma, but when Gwen finds her opened package in Ben’s bedroom, she begins to suspect that the game is responsible for both of the boys’ eerily similar conditions.

Even to Gwen, the idea of a game making people sick sounds absurd, so she decides to test her theory before going to her parents. Unfortunately, her neighbor’s older brother, Ryan, insists on checking out the game with her. That’s when they discover that the disc isn’t a game at all—it’s actually a portal to a high-tech government simulator named Eve 2.0 who’s programmed to trap players until they can complete all of the timed objectives.

With her top-notched gaming skills, Gwen is a formidable opponent, but she quickly begins to realize that playing a game versus living it is a lot harder than she ever imagined. And as the objectives become more difficult and the four kids are forced to work as a team, Gwen concedes that she may not be as good as she needs to be, which just might end up costing her not only her own life, but Pete, Ryan, and Ben’s too.

I get so much satisfaction in the writing process. I take care to choose just the right word, to make sure each sentence has the right cadence. I appreciate other writers who respect the craft in this way, and I hope my readers do so with me. Writing is a need, a desire for expression, and springs from well within my subconscious mind. Thoughts rise up, scenes rise up and blend in with the over-arching story. These thoughts emerge whenever they want to and wherever I am and probably not when I am at the computer. The computer is for the craft, the technique. The thoughts come during walks, or while driving the car, or at the grocery store. I am the willing recipient of these thoughts and so they seek me out. It's a mystery this business and art of writing and it keeps me enthralled.

Adventure, Thriller

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

A man left alone on earth.

Alan is visiting Japan on business. After the outbreak of a pandemic, he finds himself to be the single survivor. The viral disease has wiped away his past life: he must fear injury, loneliness and hunger. Yet, Alan decides to travel back to his family in Berlin, straight across Asia. An exciting, thought-provoking book, impossible to put down.

Praise for Two Journeys:

“Move over, Cormac McCarthy, another survivor is traveling the Armageddon road. Clemens P. Suter’s apocalyptic thriller grabs you in the first couple of pages and never lets go. The reader feels real empathy for the main character’s plight as he begins a seemingly impossible 9,000-mile trip to learn his family’s fate. The cause of the calamity is mysterious but clues are uncovered along the way causing tension to build until we reach the shattering climax. Two Journeys is not to be missed.” - G. Dedrick Robinson, author of Blood Scourge

SAMPLE from the novel Two Journeys:

Then one morning, the barometer’s needle started to rise, and a few hours later the weather started to improve. A new, different kind of breeze came from the southeast, blowing most of the clouds away. The sun came out; I hadn’t realized how much I had actually missed it.

Suddenly a feeling of urgency came over me. The opportune moment for crossing the channel was rapidly approaching. I tried to resist it—after all, was I ready for it? Was all the equipment on board? Could I handle the boat? Then I decided to go with the flow and to set off the next morning shortly before daylight. I had plotted my course many times over. I would aim straight for the island of Iki, which was less than thirty miles away. Then I would pass on directly to Tsu and continue along its northern coast and then cross the final part of the strait and aim for the Korean city of Pusan. The course would be strictly northwest almost all the way.

According to the maps, it should be easy sailing. My interpretation of the manual and the other books that I had found suggested that the trip would probably last fifteen hours. The charts revealed that the islands in between had been (or even were?) inhabited, offering a fallback should anything go wrong. I decided against any voluntary stopover on one of the islands. After all, should the weather worsen again, I could get stuck there indefinitely.

The challenge was the gasoline. What would happen if I ran out of gas? I had calculated the total volume of the tanks several times and had tried to estimate the amount of fuel that I would need. I had once heard that a boat would use approximately one liter for every mile, but that depended on factors such as the strength of the wind, the size of the ship, and the weight that it was carrying. The boat had several tanks, all of which now filled to the rim with fuel that I had carried over from the other ships in the harbor.

The maps showed small villages on the islands, even an airport on the bigger one, so I thought there might be the possibility to get additional fuel there. At the very last moment, I decided to take a small life raft in tow.

I studied the controls again. I had completed some practice runs in the harbor and I had ceased hitting the docks. I wondered what the shore on the other side of the strait would look like. Flying an airplane wasn’t hard but landing was—I suspected the same applied to boating. I hoped that I could find an easy port in Korea.

That night I took my final walk through town. It was getting dark already, a beautiful subtropical evening, the sky aflame and hardly any wind. The two dogs walked along, barking when they saw another dog, protecting their own pack.

I needed to get an additional compass, some new clothing, a waterproof flashlight, and some batteries.

I wandered into a part of town where I hadn’t been before. The houses were small and painted in bright pink and orange colors. I passed a park, and in the fading daylight, I saw a young couple on a park bench, romantically hugging and protecting each other from the chill that had started to come in from the sea. She had her head on his shoulder, he his cheek on her hair. His arm was around her tiny body. Her pink handbag stood straight and orderly on the gravel next to the park bench.

My heart jumped, and I quickly walked up to them. As I came closer, I saw that they were dead and in an advanced stage of decomposition. Her dress was soiled with body fluids, and their hair was blowing away with the wind.

Loneliness came over me. I looked at them for a few minutes, speculating about their lives. Finally, I turned away and left them behind, forever frozen in their final embrace.

Excerpt
Chapter 3 of Shades of Justice (Detective Madison Knight series)

They say someone’s always having a worse day than you are. Who the heck are “they,” and how would they know, anyway? Madison was pretty sure days couldn’t get much worse than the one Kimberly Olson-Malone was having. Madison couldn’t imagine finding her own mother dead—and naked with another man, no less. As much as she felt for Kimberly, she couldn’t let it cloud her judgment. Kimberly had been the one to find them and that alone made her the first suspect.

Terry pointed to the next street as they drove. “Turn right there.”

Even though Terry knew where they were going, Madison was the one driving.

She took the corner, and he pointed at a two-story, gray-brick mansion. With the exception of the forensics van and a police cruiser parked in the three-car driveway, the house had terrific curb appeal with its large front windows and double-door entry.

Madison parked out front on the street.

“Before we go in, I’m going to give you a warning,” Terry said.

She glanced over at him, her hand letting go of the door handle. Was he going to tell her it was a messy scene? There wasn’t much else that turned her stomach as did the sight and stench of a lot of blood. She gulped. The victims had been shot.

“Okay,” she said with trepidation.

“Cynthia’s on the warpath,” Terry said. “She makes your bad moods look like—”

“Be careful of your next words.”

“Or what?” He wriggled his fingers as if to say, Bring it on.

Terry really was the brother she never had. “Why’s she in a bad mood?” Madison asked but could think of at least one off the top of her head: her wedding was mere days away, and a case like this would take a lot of time for evidence collection and processing. That thought led to another. “Oh, no.”

“What?”

“We had plans for a final dress fitting tonight. We might have to push that off.”

Terry arched his brows. “I’m not a wedding planner, but shouldn’t dress fittings have been done ages ago?”

It wasn’t for the lack of trying, but it turned out that when dresses were ordered from different shops, they could be made from different dye lots. With Cynthia’s sister and bridesmaid, Tammy, living in Alabama, she’d gotten hers there while Madison ordered hers in Stiles. With take two, they returned their initial dresses and arranged to get new ones from the same bridal shop in Stiles. “It’s a long story,” was all she said.

“Okay.” Terry dragged out the word, but quickly moved on. “Well, she’s pissed because the firemen who responded to the nine-one-one call pulled the bodies out of the pool.”

“Oh,” Madison said slowly, appreciating that her friend would be livid about contamination of the crime scene. Cynthia wouldn’t care that the firemen were wired to save lives until—or unless—they could confirm death.

The two of them got out of the car, and at the front door, Madison looked up. The place had looked big from the curb, but standing next to it only impressed just how successful the Malones were.

Officer Tendum was stationed at door. He was younger, a little wet behind the ears, and he and Madison had butted heads more than once. Then again, it was his stupidity that had resulted in her former training officer, Reggie Higgins, being shot during a murder investigation about a year ago. At least Higgins had been fortunate enough to recover and return to work.

Tendum stepped to the side to allow Madison and Terry to enter the house.

Inside, they were greeted by a grand entry with two sweeping staircases that hugged the curves of two walls. A large, teardrop-crystal chandelier punctuated the center of the space. Abstract paintings adorned the walls with lighting mounted over them. Madison didn’t know much about art, but flea-market finds didn’t typically wind up in fine frames with specialty lighting.

The smell of chlorine hung in the air, and she started following her nose—and Terry—toward the back of the home.

They passed an expansive living space that could have served as a lobby for a fine hotel. A bottle of red wine sat on a coffee table as did two wineglasses, each with some wine in them. The kitchen off to the right gleamed with high-end stainless steel appliances, and a breakfast bar lined the wall.

“All this for two people,” Madison said, thinking about the imbalances of wealth distribution.

“Yep, all eight thousand square feet,” Terry responded.

He opened the door to an atrium with a million-dollar view of the Bradshaw River that ran through Stiles. The rectangular pool, surrounded by a tiled patio dotted with lounge chairs and tables, took center stage. A hot tub, large enough for six, was to the right end of the pool, and in the corner of the room, there was a sauna. Blood spatter was to the immediate edge of the pool, to the left of the pool ladder, along with the two bodies.

Matching bullet holes marked both their foreheads, but the water had cleaned the wounds. For a shooting, there was minimal mess.

From the Moment We Met
A Series of Moments Book 1
by M.L. Broome
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Sometimes you’re interested. Sometimes you can’t be bothered. Sometimes love doesn’t give you a choice. In Jacob and Lilly’s case, love isn’t letting either of them go.

Jacob Edmonton has a plan for his life, but it doesn’t include love. He was Hollywood’s quintessential golden boy—until a flash-in-the-pan fling with a high-profile singer upended his world—and his reputation. Now he’s nursing more than a wounded ego and his only goal is to repair the damage.

But his return to superstardom is shot to hell when his sister winds up undergoing emergency surgery. There he meets Lilly Staver, a straight-shooting nurse who’s as brutally honest as she is beautiful. She sees through his suave faรงade and he wants to hate her until he realizes he can’t resist her.

Lilly knows all about men like Jacob Edmonton—if you’ve seen one pretentious, egocentric celebrity—you’ve seen them all. She’s unimpressed with his Hollywood pedigree and his belief that love is reserved solely for maniacs. So why can’t she stop thinking about him? Her mind tells her to run as fast as she can from Jacob…but her heart isn’t listening.

Love as they know it just took a hairpin turn into uncharted territory, but when Jacob’s former girlfriend shows up with an opportunity to salvage his career, will he choose the life he knows or the love he never knew existed?

This is the first of three books in 'A Series of Moments', chronicling the timeless and heart-wrenching love story of Jacob Edmonton & Lilly Staver.

Unguarded Moments
A Series of Moments Book 2
“From the Moment We Met”, the first book in the romantic saga, A Series of Moments, introduced us to Jacob Edmonton and Lilly Staver, and a love neither believed possible. But life is all about the choices you carry with you and those you leave behind. Love is no different.

Now, in “Unguarded Moments”, Jacob realizes that his actions have consequences, and his heart is paying the price.

Jacob made a choice. Now, in “Unguarded Moments”, he realizes he’s made the wrong one. The lights of Hollywood do shine, but not nearly as bright as the light of love. He's ready to fight tooth and nail to bring Lilly back into his life but is it too late to undo the damage?

Lilly saw the writing on the wall, but she chose to follow her heart instead. Her foolish, naรฏve heart. She's learned her lesson many times over—loving Jacob was a bad idea in every sense of the word. She vows to never make the same mistake again...but can she resist the one man who still holds all the pieces of her shattered soul? She gave him her love, but instead of loving her back—he watched her walk away.

Thousands of kilometers lie between them now, but the distance isn't Jacob's toughest hurdle. It will be far more difficult to convince Lilly that loving him wasn't the gravest mistake she's ever made.

The heart wants what the heart wants—but can Lilly believe in Jacob again, or will her fears end any chance of their reconciliation?

This is the second of three books in 'A Series of Moments', chronicling the timeless and heart-wrenching love story of Jacob Edmonton & Lilly Staver

Beautifully Broken Moments
A Series of Moments Book 3
A Series of Moments follows the journey of Jacob Edmonton, a world-famous actor, and Lilly Staver, the nurse who saved him from himself. “Beautifully Broken Moments” is the stunning conclusion in the trilogy, but after all the upheaval, will Jacob and Lilly ever find their Happily Ever After?

All it takes is a moment—one moment can change the course of your life—and love.

With a single statement during a press conference, Jacob upended his world, destroying his happiness and heart in the process. When his ex-girlfriend Victoria claimed she was not only engaged to the acting legend but also expecting his child, Jacob went along with the charade. But his actions were not to salvage his reputation or career; they were to protect the only thing that mattered—his real fiancรฉe, Lilly. To save her from the backlash of Victoria’s jealousy and rage, Jacob let go of the only woman he had ever loved.

As the truth behind the events of the last several months shifts into sharp focus, Jacob is left with one final choice—move on without Lilly or fight with everything in his being to reunite with the love of his life. For Jacob, it’s the easiest decision he’s ever made.

Lilly watched her dreams crumble on international television when Jacob claimed she was ‘a brief fling’; too bad her heart never received the memo. Devastated by his most recent betrayal, she plans to flee England and Jacob forever, intent on escaping their tempestuous romance, until she learns the reality behind Jacob’s actions.

Just as their plans start falling back into place, the wheel of life doles out a tragedy that will test them on every level. Is Jacob’s love enough to carry them through or is the trail of heartache too difficult for Lilly to traverse again?

Life is a series of adventures, waiting to be explored.

That's how I look at life, the greatest adventure we will ever experience. My name is Julie Soper and I write under the pen name M.L. Broome (the M.L. stands for Mezza Luna). The name came to me in a dream, which is how many of my story ideas also appear.

My motto is that I'm a believer in love and a lover of life, even when life isn't being kind or pretty. I've seen the darker side of human suffering through my years as an ICU nurse and nurse educator, but in those dark days, I also witnessed the depths of strength present in everyone. We are extraordinary beings when we allow ourselves the freedom to dream.

I've always created stories, with most remaining locked in the vault of my mind. But the story of Jacob and Lilly wasn't satisfied being relegated to the confines of my head, and their tale of love found and lost was birthed into the world.

I hope you enjoy their love story. I know I do. I love these characters, even when their actions drive me to the brink of madness.

Love, light, and magic.
