A secret love becomes a fatal affair in a twisting novel of suspense by Wall Street Journal bestselling author Joe Hart.

When novelist Andy Drake returns to his hometown to care for his ailing father, a reconnection with his childhood friend Rachel escalates into a secret love affair. For Rachel, struggling to maintain the facade of a picture-perfect life, it’s an escape from an emotionally abusive marriage. Then Andy receives an anonymous note warning him to end the affair. Or else.

Whoever’s been watching is going to make Andy pay. Weeks later, Rachel’s husband, David, is shot to death. Rachel and her two young sons vanish without a trace. One misstep, one careless reveal, and Andy could look as guilty as sin. Clue by clue, as his investigation into the mystery unfolds, Andy discovers that he and Rachel weren’t the only ones keeping secrets.

Nothing in this quiet neighborhood is as it seems. No one peeking from behind the curtains of their homes can be trusted. And the worst is yet to come. Because David isn’t the only one who will die.

The Sexy Nerd's Review. . .

This story drained me somewhat and not in a good way. I kept trying to get interested and stay focused, but I just found the story to be boring and lacked the excitement I was expecting. What bothered me more is I’ve read some of Hart’s books and they’re usually pretty good, but I really struggled with this one.

Andy Drake came back home to take care of his father who was diagnosed with dementia. Even though his old man had the disease, he was still sharp enough to know what each of his adult children were up to. Especially when it came to Andy. He could sense something was seriously wrong with him but couldn’t quite figure it out.

Andy was keeping a secret. He was having an affair with his neighbor, Rachel, who was very married with two children. For the few months they had been seeing each other, he was under the impression their affair was kept secret that is until one day he finds a note under his door advising him this person knows about their secret, and he better stay away from Rachel, “or else!” Or Else, thought Andy. As careful as they had been who could possibly know what the two of them were up to? Could it be his nosey neighbor across from his father’s house? Did Rachel’s husband follow them and find out?

While Andy was racking his brain trying to figure that out, a woman he was very close to, as a child, came up dead. While he and his family grieved over her loss, Rachel and her sons went missing, and Rachel’s husband was also dead. There were plenty of dead bodies surrounding Andy as he tried to use his super sleuth skills from being a mystery novelist in helping to solve all these mysteries. Problem was, the more he dug into different avenues it was becoming apparent that he was constantly barking up the wrong tree and it was frustrating him. He wasn’t the only one who was frustrated. It was like following Andy’s breadcrumbs in actual real time. It was driving me nuts.

When all was said and done, the picture began to emerge, and I didn’t care. Do you see what I mean. There were too many other things going on in the background that Hart seemed to put all his attention to, and things that I really wanted more of an explanation, it’s like they were mere afterthoughts. This kept happening throughout the story to the point it exhausted me. As I mentioned before, I was just as exhausted as the character. Perhaps this is what the author was going for? I’m not sure but this reader had had enough, and this was a short read that took way too long to read.

The Sexy Nerd gives Or Else three stars. This story just wasn’t my cup of tea. Of course, when reading, sometimes you enjoy a read and other times you don’t. Unfortunately, I wasn’t sold with this, but of course, that doesn’t mean you will not like it. Until next time, Nerds, you know how we do!
