The nightmare she’s running from is nothing compared to where she’s headed.
Tegan is eight months pregnant, alone, and desperately wants to put her crumbling life in the rearview mirror. So she hits the road, planning to stay with her brother until she can figure out her next move. But she doesn’t realize she’s heading straight into a blizzard.
She never arrives at her destination.
Stranded in rural Maine with a dead car and broken ankle, Tegan worries she’s made a terrible mistake. Then a miracle she is rescued by a couple who offers her a room in their warm cabin until the snow clears.
But something isn’t right. Tegan believed she was waiting out the storm, but as time ticks by, she comes to realize she is in grave danger. This safe haven isn’t what she thought it was, and staying here may have been her most deadly mistake yet.
And now she must do whatever it takes to save herself—and her unborn child.
A gut-wrenching story of motherhood, survival, and twisted expectations, #1 New York Times bestselling author Freida McFadden delivers a snowbound thriller that will chill you to the bone.
The Sexy Nerd's Review. . .
Young Tegan was planning for a trip to go visit her brother during the winter season. Of course, she decides to pick up an extra shift at the grocery store and ends up getting on the road a little later than she originally planned. The reason for this trip was so she could explain in person why she didn’t take the payout she was due to receive from an incident that occurred a few months earlier. Oh...did I fail to mention Tegan is eight-months pregnant!
Her car wasn’t in great condition to begin with but her anger from the exchange she recently had with the baby’s father aided in fueling her to make this trip to see her brother. And while she’s driving, an unforeseen blizzard begins to rage. Her car only had front-wheel drive and even though she’s experienced with driving in snow, it’s a whole different dynamic when you’re pregnant.
Tegan’s visibility had all but diminished when a tree was coming in to focus at the speed of light and the next thing she knows, her vehicle was wrapped around it and she was in pain. All she could think about was her unborn baby. She didn’t want to die and kill her baby too. As luck would have it, another motorist was out in the blizzard and saw her wrecked and helped. Only problem was, this man was the size of two trees and quite menacing. Her instincts told her something was off about him, but she had no other options. And besides, she ended up breaking her ankle in the crash.
This big man named Hank advised Tegan, he would take her to the hospital after the roads were cleared which wouldn’t be until another day or so. They arrive at his home and a seemingly nice woman steps out front to greet them. She didn’t look like an axe murderer, and she felt safe with her instead of Hank. She then learns the nice lady is Hank’s wife, Polly. As luck would have it, Polly was a Registered Nurse. Good thing too because Tegan’s busted ankle was going to need all the tender, loving care she could muster.
When Polly noticed the basketball-sized stomach protruding, she realized she would have to be extra careful with Tegan so as not to injure the baby. This brought a smile to Polly’s face. She loved children more than life itself and the fates chose that Polly was unable to have children, until the heaven’s opened up and sent her Tegan and this little bundle of joy she was carrying. It was a win-win for all involved, right?
Wow! McFadden sure knows how to bring the fear to the reader. I’m sitting back soaking up the words and screaming at my Kindle for Tegan to figure out something isn’t quite right, but she seemed to be worrying about the wrong things. Tegan’s character was extremely frustrating for me. Uggg!
This story had so many twists and turns, just like I like ‘em and I’m losing my mind wondering what was going to happen next. McFadden keeps her readers on their toes along with pins and needles. The ending had several surprises that I most enjoyed. This was a good read.
The Sexy Nerd gives The Crash four stars. The reason for my one star deduction was that this story dragged on a bit and began grating on my nerves, but that could be because Tegan frustrated me. ๐ It’s still a great thriller to read. Until next time, Nerds, you know how we do!
