CHAPTER 6

SQUIRT: WE MIGHT NEED AN UMBRELLA

Bubba is the luckiest kid on the planet. Only he would find something on his first try.

“Are they human bones?” he asked, fingering the white, splintered pieces.

“Dude, that’s gross,” I said. “Don’t touch them.”

But he didn’t care. Neither did Esperanza. She picked up a short, smooth one and examined it. “I’m not sure. Let’s take these to Papi and find out.”

She led us to a large, white tent and pulled back the door flap. We stepped inside. Three men stood next to a table covered in stone artifacts. They stopped talking when they saw us.

Hola, José,” she said to one of them. “Do you know where mi papi is?”

The short, husky man grinned, revealing a gold tooth. “No, muchacha. Haven’t seen him.” He turned his attention to Bubba, who held the screen. “Hola, little man. What do you have there?”

“Bones.”

“Let me see.”

The other men slipped out as Bubba handed the screen to José. “They’re like the ones we found in quadrant three this morning,” he said, poking them with his stubby fingers.

“Do you know what kind they are?” I asked.
